At Twickenham Osteopathy Clinic we take a whole person approach to your pain. Once serious causes have been ruled out it is important to understand what other factors might be causing/contributing to your pain.
For any pain – particularly when it is persistent – the brain and the mind have a huge influence over the pain you feel. Commonly the brain and nervous system can cause pain to continue long after the original injury has occurred. This is very real pain but just not caused by injury any longer.
This can be due to many factors such as:
- Fear, anxiety and stress – past or present
- Past experiences and expectations including things you have been told by other health professionals
- Personality traits
- Environmental cues, social factors
The aim of our treatment is to identify the important factors contributing to your pain and address them. We use a range of techniques including breathing exercises, mindfulness and structured exercise to break the pain cycle. Have a look at Claire’s blog to read more examples of how the mind affects our experiences of pain.
The best thing about this approach is that once you understand this mind body approach much of it can by done by you outside of clinic time. This means results can be seen very quickly indeed. We give you the skills you need to tackle your pain now and in the future.
